Session Title: Out of the Shallows: Four Principles for Diving Deeper into Culturally Responsive Practices
Session Description: Leading equity initiatives in today’s multiracial schools take passion, vision, and intention. As surface-level celebrations of culture often fall short in meeting diverse students’ needs, removing barriers to equity requires in-depth knowledge in culturally responsive practices. Imperative are four principles of effective culturally responsive practices (Embrace, Empower, Educate, and Include), which help educators identify gaps in equity and discover possibilities for positive change not just for the whole student but for every student, every day.
Participants will:
Gain foundational knowledge in the importance of culturally responsive pedagogy and equity pedagogy.
Discuss four principles educators should use in guiding their culturally responsive and equity-based efforts.
Create an action plan which identifies areas within their sphere of influence to create authentic changes in addressing inequity in their schools.
